Understanding Elbow Conditions

Elbow pain may result from repetitive use, throwing, a fall, tendon damage, instability, or changes inside the joint. Evaluation begins with where the pain occurs and which movements bring it on.

Common Elbow Conditions

The elbow combines bone, cartilage, ligaments, muscles, and tendons in a compact joint. Symptoms and examination help identify the involved structure.

Tennis & Golfer’s Elbow

Repetitive loading can irritate the tendons attached to the outer or inner elbow. Pain often increases with gripping, lifting, wrist motion, or sports activity.

UCL Injuries

The ulnar collateral ligament helps stabilize the inner elbow during throwing. Injury may cause medial elbow pain, reduced throwing velocity, or a sense of instability.

Distal Biceps Injuries

The distal biceps tendon attaches near the elbow and helps bend the arm and rotate the forearm. A tear may cause a pop, bruising, weakness, and a change in muscle contour.

Triceps Tendon Injuries

The triceps tendon helps straighten the elbow. Strains or tears may cause pain, swelling, bruising, or weakness when pushing or extending the arm.

Loose Bodies & Cartilage Problems

Fragments of bone or cartilage and other joint-surface problems can contribute to catching, locking, swelling, or loss of elbow motion.

Elbow Arthroscopy

Elbow arthroscopy uses a small camera and instruments to evaluate and treat selected problems within the joint, including loose bodies, stiffness, and some cartilage conditions.

Evaluation

Your visit may include a review of work, sports, and injury history; an examination of motion, strength, stability, and nerve function; and X-rays. MRI, ultrasound, or other tests may be recommended when needed.

Treatment Options

Treatment may include activity modification, therapy, bracing, medication, or an injection when appropriate. Tendon or ligament repair or reconstruction, fracture care, or arthroscopy may be discussed for selected injuries.
